The Bilby

The Bilby is a small native marsupial which is threatened with extinction because of loss of habitat and the increase of predicators especially introduced pests such as foxes, and the many domestic pets such as cats and dogs which now run wild. Most of the dingoes that are seen are now a mix of dingo and domestic dog. Thus even the native dingo is threatened with extinction in its pure form.

In an effort to prevent their extinction Peter McRea and Frank Manthey from the National parks and wildlife service have led a campaign to fence off a large reserve and rehabilitate the Bilby in the wild.

Visitors to Charleville can see the Bilby during one of the many evening shows held at the National Parks and Wildlife Office. There is also a souvenir shop where items relating to the Bilby and other native flora and fauna can be purchased.

Remember , the introduction of the European rabbit caused much destruction to the environment in Australia and has led to the destruction of animals such as the Bilby. Instead of buying Easter Bunnies, during Easter, why not support the 'Save the Bilby Fund' by buying a chocolate Bilby for the children.

You can also help the Australian fauna by keeping better control of your pets.
Keep them in at night,
don't let them roam,
and minimise their unnecessary reproduction by having them desexed.
